The Lake of Vrana is situated in Ravni Kotari, northeast of Pakostane. The water is supplied by the Skorobic brook and several springs and flows beneath the ground.
The north-eastern shore of the lake is forested and here lies the highest summit in Ravni Kotari, Standarac (305m).
Lake of Vrana with the surroundings was pronounced Nature Park on July 21, 1999. The park boundary stretches between Pirovac and Pakostan. The park has the surface of 57 km2, and the greatest part of 30,2 km2 belongs to Lake of Vrana, which lies in the direction northwest-southeast and stretching in line with the seacoast, which is sometimes less than a kilometer away.
It is a Karst field filled with water and represents a crypto-depression. The dominant feature of the Park is the Special ornithological reserve, which received that status back in 1983 and was included in the list of Important Bird Areas in Europe thanks to its well-preserved great reeds on the northwestern part of the lake, as a rare marsh system of great bio-variety and of singular scientific and ecological importance.
Covered with grass, bull-rush, reed and cane it partly resembles grassland interspersed with shallow ponds, covered with evergreen flowers of rich colors and numerous butterflies, dragon-fly and other various insects that are favorable for bird life during the whole year.
The Park area is a very important resting-place and feeding place for a number of European endangered species. More than 140 000 of water birds regularly spend there winters here. Not only the birds, but also the fish in the lake contribute to the importance of the park.
This area certainly has much more specific phenomena that shall be discovered in future explorations. The climate of this area is typically Mediterranean. Water springs, the pine-tree forest and camp “Crkvine” always offer protection and refreshment in the Park. In addition to “Bird Watchers” sports fisherman shall also find this a place for quality vacation and relaxation. They can fish on the lake and its shores for almost the entire year. Bicyclists and walkers shall undergo a unique experience on our 30 km long cycling path around the lake.
Nature Park “Laka of Vrana” is an area that hides many more secrets and it is a true source of new scientific discoveries that the Park management, in cooperation with experts from different fields, is trying to discover and present to the rest of the world. This is a rare area where in such a short time you can find three completely different landscapes: seacoast and the rich archipelago in front of it, Mediterranean swamp with unique landscape and ecosystem and right over the hill a rural idyll of the towns in Ravni Kotari. |
