History of Zaton

Zaton i domovinski rat

As well as entire Croatia, political flows and winds have caught Zaton in 1990. Here, especially young people, workers and peasants, pupils and students, well formed a judgment about the events which have happened in Yugoslavia. They understood how Serbian nationalists want to use the breakdown of socialist system and confiscate Croatian towns and country, especially the coast. Descendants of the antifascists and other local people have accepted the idea of reconciliation among Croatians. In the beginning of the year, exactly 20th March 1990, there has been established the branch of Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and on the lead were standing Mile Martinovic Zivkov as the president, prof. Elida Pamic as the vice-president, Marijan Mrsa Ivin as the secretary and Miroslav Ajdukovic Vicin as the treasurer.

Marinko Mrsa pok. Frane has been chosen for the president of the local community on the 16th of June 1990. In January 1991, has been established the Civil protection and Crisis headquarters. Commander of Crisis headquarters has been Marinko Mrsa. It has been brought in the full-time duty and connection with the Crisis headquarters in Sibenik. On the 22nd of January 1991 have been eight people from Zaton included in units of MUP. Other volunteers and members of parties have started to exercise with few weapons which were gathered because of defense from the possible attack. The organization of Red Cross has been established. Medical unit with three tenths of women and girls have been led by medical brother Mladen Kulas, pok. Sime.

At the end of June 199, Coga has led his unit on the area of Skradin hinterland, and from 10th of July he was constantly in that area, defending from irregular Serbian units under the protection of Yugoslavian-army. They have been in the led of the colonel Ratko Mladic, later general and war criminal. Until the 16th September 1991, in the unit have been 87 volunteers from Zaton. For a long time Yugoslav government and army have spread the slogan how Army tries to divide disunited Serbs and Croatian, to calm down and to disarm them. On the 16th of September 1991, Yugoslav army denied this publicly: without any motive or provocation (around Sibenik there was any conflict) they have directed strong tank unit from the area of Knin with around 40 tanks and many accompanying wheels, intending to occupy Sibenik bridge and attack town from west. There were no Paramilitary units.

After passing through the place of Gaceleze, tanks were separated on two roads, from which one leads in Zaton. When the group of tanks came in Zaton, all inhabitants of Zaton have closed themselves in their houses. From one of the tanks, two or three officers have come out. Inhabitants from neighboring houses have heard how the one speech: ''Where they have sent me, mother f..., through this gorge, they could beat me with stones”. Then they slowly headed for the bridge.

- Zaton David against Goliath -
In the command of major Coga in Velika Glava have heard, across the radio embroiders, how the colony of tanks head for the Zaton. They have knew how in Zaton is not present neither Croatian unit, neither the people of Zaton possess any weapons. It has been decided that towards Zaton immediately goes one patrol, four of fighters in the car. They have had four guns and one bazooka. They were: lieutenant Mile Martinovic, Ante Mrsa (Okac), Ivica Zivkovic (Ciko) and Ante Kulas Tomin. They have run across Bilice and Sibenik, and in few seconds they were on the Sibenik Bridge, assuming that tanks are still situated around Zaton.

They have crossed the bridge “a little after 7 o'clock PM'', says Martinovic, and then, from the first curve as the ghost in the early evening, appeared the tank on the short distance. Only a couple of seconds needed them to find themselves in the dense bush beside the road. Ante Kulas has had bazooka in his hands, which never before hasn’t used. As the distance has been around 100 meters, he succeeded to hit the tank, cut his caterpillars and the colon stopped. They have rolled through the dense bush and succeeded to avoid the burst from tanks. They have been unpleasantly frightened. The blood flowed from Ante’s ears, because he didn’t know that it’s necessary to have special stopples for ears along with these arms. Nobody knows how ''friends'' from the tank have experienced this hit. Even their fear has had to have large eyes. They might think of how in front of them is a well armed squad!

Professor Ivo Livakovic in his book ''OBADVA …OBADVA …’ written directly after the battles for Sibenik, on the p. 43 mentions struggles from 16th of September 1991 around the bridge. ''In 19.48 it hears two detonations and gust fires from the Sibenik Bridge. On this occasion, near the bridge has came to the action and one tank has been destroyed''. In the description of situations around Bridge he does quote neither Croatian unit nor the group of fighters who was there. He didn’t know for Zaton four in the car ''Lada'', which was squashed after this by one of tanks. Through eight days of attacks on Sibenik from all genders of Yugoslav army: tanks, helicopters and planes, ships as well as crew from barracks, many facts and events stay still unrecorded and interpreted. We know and remember only that the love for defense of the freedom has overcome the steel and gunpowder!

About the case of Zaton four, who hit the first tank had been twice written in Slobodna Dalmacija. Woman journalist for the first time wasn’t able to find out names of these men, to describe their happiness, and also the heroic deed! Knin strategists have expected stronger struggles around Sibenik, so they set the war hospital around Velika Mrdakovica. But when cannons from Zirje and from Primosten drove away tanks from the Bridge, they have run; not only tanks but also surgeons and wounded persons. They have left enough medical supplies, and one of doctors didn’t succeed to take along even his medical bag.

Professor Livakovic hereafter has written: ''By order of the Crisis command from Sibenik, 18th September 1991 was evacuated about two-thirds of population from Zaton (older persons, children and parish priest) in Bilice. The Zaton troop, them 80, from Velika Glava, immediately has been relocated on hills beside the road Zaton - Stankovci. Zaton and Rasline has been cooperating during the war and functioning as the same body. With them fought together the people from Tisno until the liberation of the bridge. On the 18th of September 1991, in the restaurant ''Vrulje'' and tavern ''Porat'' townswomen have cooked two meals daily and carry to defenders on positions.'' Finally on the 23rd of September 1991, Mladic conquerors abandoned the area around the bridge. The brave four from the ''Lada'' has continued to fight in the other battalion, 113. Brigade. Three fighters from Zaton were killed in struggles, and one young man died from infamous ''bells''. These were our heroes: Darko Crnica, Vedran Coga, Vinko Severdija and victim of terror Marko Bilusic. Over 213 of people of Zaton were included in operations of defense on different battlefields.
