History of Zaton

Zaton nakon 1. svj. rata

Events from the World War II, from the antifascist struggle in which people of Zaton actively have participated, had been numerous and turbulent. Happenings in the World War II considerably have influenced on the population of Zaton after 1941. In year 1939 in Zaton has been 1600 inhabitants, and towards the list from 1953 has been 1264 or 21% less. Besides the 230 persons killed at war, on the decrease have influenced departure on the work in other places as well as escape abroad. Only the killed were 14,4% from the total amount, and this is the very high percentage.

It’s not convenient to compare the small village with whole states, but nevertheless you can gain the impression of the size. Exactly on the 1000 inhabitants in Yugoslavia, there were lost 108 men, USSR 40, Poland 220, and Zaton 144 victims. The Italian occupying forces have burned 64 houses in Zaton. Through Italian camps has passed 580 people from Zaton, thereof the largest number in the infamous camp on the island Molat. More than half of inhabitants of Zaton who have lived before the beginning of the war in 1941 are on the list of those who died or those who has gone through Italian camps and jailhouses.

Soon after the end of the 2nd World war, Yugoslav power has had the problem in Vojvodina. It has been decided that there should settle the part of the population from so called passive parts of Dalmatia, Dalmatian Zagora and from the area of Knin. Families have got flats and houses. It needed to take the control of the new technology of work on the cultivation of land and plants different from those in Zaton.

And climate chances had been different and more inconvenient from those in Zaton, and for certain persons completely unacceptable. After a few months of residence in Stanisic, some candidates yearned for return to Zaton. A great number of colonists have started to abandon houses and land and came back in groups. At the end of 1948, the entire colonists (except one family) returned in Zaton with their bags and bundles.

Just as the group of peasants went to Vojvodina, other peasants have been recommended to register in the Peasant working cooperative ''POBJEDA'', because it was the time of collective economy. SRZ ''POBJEDA'' has been established in the March 1946. After the century of state of neglecting and retrogress in feudal chances, interlude after the World War I, when has been implemented the land reform, (without the any social help), has not brought any result, besides each more accelerated pauperizations of the peasantry. Besides on existing vineyards, they tried with the cultivation of new surfaces under the vine. In the area of Ravni kotari the Cooperatives has obtained a few hectares of new surfaces. Agronomists from Sibenik have helped to plant vineyards on new bases and new sorts. Misfortune has wanted that this land has had high ground-waters and vines have not been able to succeed. And distance from Zaton had been great, which enough ruined the economic calculations. Soon everything was hanged out to dry. Also, the SRZ was dealing with fishing - ships and nets were taken out from some fishermen. The Great Producer of Oil has been used in Zaton, also from confiscated properties.

As in entire Yugoslavia, the movement of transfer on to the socialist economy in the agriculture was poorly functioning, the SRZ in Zaton stopped to work in 1955. Peasants have been given back their land, but again in somewhat poorer state. After the colonists have returned from Vojvodina, and the SRZ has been extinguished, to all farmers, especially younger men remained the only possibility to earn the bread in the Sibenik industry or some other branch of economy. Most of them find employment in the Repair shipyard in Mandalina.
