Cultural life of Zaton

Zaton near Sibenik - culture

When in 1994 Zaton parish priest Don Ante Ivas, in the partnership with Museum of town of Sibenik, in the area of old church organized the exhibition of antiquity, people were surprised by the number and the age of exhibits which Zaton had at disposal. There was church dishes, oath gifts in the silver and gold, artistic pictures, mass vestments, church books as well as parish and guild documents. Also, there have been exposed archeological findings from Velika Mrdakovica, and money from the area of Bankovac. Zaton can proudly emphasize his at least two people in the area of cultural life.

GABRIEL CVITAN, he has gone through Training-school in Sibenik as already grown man and skillful farmer. Working with his brothers, he became fond of olives, vines and stone. Skillfully he built field walls on Siroki put and Ravna glavica. He has been a teacher in Vodice and Betina, and on many places in Bosnia. As the school inspector he was working in Omis, from where he was expelled by the Italians in 1941 to Zagreb. There he was working as the school inspector, organizing a children magazine and collaborating in several others. Central Croatian Cultural and Publishing Society have published his poetry collection, VOICE of the COUNTRY, in Sibenik 1937.

Children songs in the collection WATER FROM STONE, and children short stories in publication BIRD COURTS has been published in Zagreb in 1944. Together with Branko Klaric in Zagreb, he has published the book of songs, SINGERS of the COUNTRY. In different magazines he released a few short stories, from which distinguishes the social short story of DESTINIES of SERVANT of DAVID. His life has been interrupted in 1945 in bloody Bleiburg, in the age of 41. Cvitan’s world has been turning around two axles: faith in the social teaching of which speaks the Church and faith in Croatia which favor brothers Radic.

PETAR BILUSIC - on his ninety-year-old journey, he difficultly reconciled with misfortunes of Zaton farmers and fishermen. Yet harder were political abuses. His adult years he has spent through prisons of kingdom Yugoslavia, from which has came out more mature. His Loparina (the vineyard in the stone) didn’t bring the bread. In Sibenik in 1954 he released the first poetry collection under the title TOWN AT SEA.

A little later he released his child poem GRANFATHER SAILOR and GRANDCHILD CAPTAIN (translated on Italian). In times when even stronger pens were silent about the Croatian past, his ''grandfather'' defiantly speaks to his grandchild. He has released also a few poetry collections and children short stories, partly scattered along magazines and newspapers. The political part of Petar’s life has been less written out (most along prison registers). When ideas of socialism have circulated around the world, when they have been accepted by some English lords and American businessmen, then they have been acceptable by our peasants landless, fishermen without nets and workers without the tool. Today Gabriel and Petar would gladly, hand in hand, take a walk through Zaton!

It is our hope that the name of Zaton would be known through the world by the event of beatification of fra Ante Antic. He was born in Prvic - Sepurina, from where his parents a little earlier have come to live in Zaton, and where he has spent his childhood. In Zaton he has obtained literacy and religiousness, and with the help of Zaton parish priest he gets among monks. The special form of cultural expression in Zaton manifests through the harmony-singing. Especially distinguished the informal group in which have sung brothers Petar, Roko and Mate Bilusic, Tome and Augustin Milosevic, Frane Mrsa (Pekin), Slavo Zivkovic pok Roka, Tome Cvitan and other. It was between 1930 and 1941.

From 1933 in Zaton has functioned the reading room. The founder has been the local teacher Nikola Zivkovic. It has functioned successfully till 1941, to the arrival of Italian occupiers. The singing club ''Seljacka sloga'' functioned for shorter time, which was managed by Don Joso Krnic from 1935. Cultural club ''Sloga'' has been renewed in 1975 with a lot of the singing and tours. It has had the singing and playing section. The numerous memberships have been guided by Slavo Zivkovic. These years with the around 3500 publications has been established the library which has been systematized by the prof. Tome Zivkovic, librarian. War chances from 1991 to 1995 have been difficult for the work of the library, but library holdings have been preserved.
Zaton brass band successfully plays from 15th February 1983.
