Windsurfing in Zaton

Windsurfing

Windsurfing (also called boardsailing) is a sport involving travel over water on a small 2-4.7 meter board powered by wind acting on a single sail, that is connected to the board via a flexible joint. The sport is a hybrid between sailing and surfing. The sail board might be considered the most minimalistic version of the modern sailboat, with the major exception that steering is accomplished by the rider tilting the mast and sail or, when planing, banking the board, rather than with a rudder.

Windsurfers can travel over flat water as long as there is enough wind; they can also cut into breaking waves and perform spectacular stunts. Windsurfing can mean a peaceful relaxed pastime on the water to some people, it can be a high-stress high-adrenalin sport to others, but it can also be a lifestyle of seeking the endless limits of perfection in skills and self-expression.

Windsurfing is particularly enjoyable at wind strengths of Beaufort 3 or higher. The pull on the upper body can be damaging to children under 12. It can be a bit costly to get started but the rush it provides creates a quick addiction to most who will try more than a few times and get some speed.

The beginnings of windsurfing can be traced back to 1969 when two friends Drake and Schweitzer who invented the sport in the US. Windsurf boards production followed very soon after, already in 1970. Current boards can easily achieve a 65 km/h speed, and skillful windsurfers can jump up to 10-meter height or sail the waves of average

Windsurfing equipment
You only need a couple of things for windsurfing. For UVA and UVB protection, hypothermia, and fall protection, it is recommended to use a wet suit, from 2 to 5 mm thick. Since you lean on your feet during windsurfing, be sure to wear shoes, or better, boots for windsurfing. Because you run the surfsail with your hands, gloves are another part of the necessary equipment. When shopping, choose the tightest pair of gloves because they tend to stretch when wet. After you learn the beginners' techniques, try getting a trapeze because it doesn't strain the hands as much and makes the managing of the windsurf board easier.

Best windsurfing location

Jadrija and Srima (Sibenik)
In Jadrija and Srima, resorts near Sibenik, you can experience a whole spectrum of different winds. During spring and autumn you will "catch" a strong bura and a medium jugo, and in the summer tramuntana and maestral will create excellent conditions for windsurfing. Due to several islands in front of Jadrija, it is safe to windsurf so all windsurf-lovers can practice their sport regardless of their level of knowledge or skill.

Zaton
Pleasant warm wind (jugo) that blows from the Southwest creates good conditions for windsurfing-beginners during summer months. Also, not so strong but constant wind is created by bura that blows from Northeast and waves appear suitable for surfers - free riders.
